The confrontation between India and Chinese soldiers in the Galvan Valley of Ladakh for the last one month took violent form on Monday night.  According to the Indian Army, 20 soldiers, including India's commanding officer (colonel) were killed in a skirmish with China on the Line of Actual Control (LAC).  At the same time, news agency ANI claimed that 43 Chinese soldiers were killed and many were seriously injured in retaliation.  The army said in a statement that there was a clash between Indian and Chinese soldiers in the Galvan area on the night of 15-16 June.  There were casualties on both sides.  The clash occurred during the retreat of the jawans from their respective places.

A US State Department spokesman said that we are closely watching the situation in India and China on the Line of Actual Control (LAC).  He further said that we convey our condolences to the 20 Indian soldiers who died during the skirmish.

 He said that both India and China have expressed a desire to end tensions.  He said that we support a peaceful solution to the current situation.  Let me tell you that on June 2, President Trump had discussed the situation of tension on the Indo-China border during a telephone conversation with PM Modi.


 UN worried over violent clash among soldiers

 UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has expressed concern over the violent clash of India-China troops over the LAC in the Galvan Valley, appealing that both sides exercise maximum restraint.  During the regular press briefing, Guterus spokesman Ari Kanneka said that we are concerned about the violence between India and China and the news of the deaths of soldiers.  We expect both countries to take a positive stand to end tense situations.
